The SMART Center, Science Mathematics Applied Resources for Teachers Center, was established in 1990 in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston.

The purpose of the Center is to provide programs for the enhancement of pre-college math and science teaching. The SMART Center provides in-service and staff development programs in chemistry, physics and physical science for K-12 teachers. Some of the current programs are Electricity, Light and Magnetism Institutes for IPC teachers, Enhancement of Chemical Science Concepts for elementary and intermediate school teachers, and Teaching Science with TOYS (Teaching Our Youth Science) program created by Professor Mickey Sarquis of the Center for Chemical Education (CCE) at Miami University in Ohio.

Programs designed for high school and elementary school students are also available.
