At the invitation of the Robert A. Welch Foundation Mamie Moy has administered and directed the Welch Summer Scholar Program (WSSP) continuously since 1988. Prior to that date the WSSP was a held only at the University of Texas at Austin. Due to the success of the program the Foundation established two additional sites – University of Houston and Texas Tech University – in 1988. There was a break in the program at Texas Tech for 2 years. Currently the program is held at five sites – University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Houston and Texas Tech University.

WSSP is a highly competitive program for high school juniors (rising seniors) who show strong potential for academic achievement in science and engineering. All students in the state of Texas are invited to apply. Over the past four years approximately 60 students are accepted to participate in the five week residential research program. Students live on campus and are assigned to participate actively in ongoing research projects mentored by the PI and his/her staff.

The student’s five week experience culminates in an oral report as well as a written report of the research effort. The written reports are published annually.

Over 400 students have participated in the program at the University of Houston since 1988.
